When Life on the Water staff writer Dana W. Todd phoned Rand Soellner, (Senior Architect of the firm), she asked if the Architect had any homes on the water for which she could write an article for Life on the Water magazine.  He did have one, dating back to 1975, The Thomas House, on Sanibel Island, Florida: right on the beach of Pine Island Sound.  But he couldn’t lay his hands on many photos documenting that, even though, back then, it had extensive coverage in the Miami Herald and a Better Homes & Gardens publication.

So, she asked if he had anything else that had a view of the water.  He did: the Eagle Mountain Aerie, in Lake Toxaway, and built in the 21st century.  She and Rand discussed this and he sent her some of his firm’s photos.  She and her editor, Christy Martin, discussed it and they decided to do an article: MOUNTAIN MANSION.

Quoting from the Life on the Water article: Rand Soellner, Architect, ArCH, NCARB, LHI in North Carolina calls our feature home the Eagle Mountain Aerie, as American Eagles are known to inhabit the Lake Toxaway area.  Soellner says: “The home is an outstanding example of strong American values in a mountain environment.  The timber work is muscular, oversize & bold.  The roofs have a steep pitch and use timeless materials that should weather in place for centuries.”  Featured on page 38, the home was created by merging the Clients’ desired Lifestyle with their Land, while maintaining high environmental integrity.”

“Merging the Clients’ Lifestyle & Land.”  That’s a phrase well-known to this architectural firm.  That’s how they create every project for every Client, and how they have done it since 1974, when they designed their first house for their first Client down in Florida.  Since then, hundreds of projects later, brings us to the present, and a healthy and robust track record of projects featured in books & magazines worldwide.
